First made in the early 1950s, Nylabones are toys made for dogs to gnaw on. They are designed to last a long time and help keep a dogs teeth and gums clean. They are also helpful for dogs with separation anxiety that drives them to chewing or who are just otherwise bored and feeling a bit destructive.

Most raw bones that have not been cooked are edible for dogs. Raw chicken, turkey, lamb, or beef bones are soft enough to chew, eat, and digest. That said, with all bones, there is a risk of...

The most important thing to realize is that you are the boss as to what kind of treats you give your dog. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of giving your dog a calming treat, then do your best to avoid those products. Most pet owners seem to be comfortable feeding their dogs raw meaty bones.

The bowel movements after feeding bones are harder which helps express anal glands and get rid of toxins. Chewing on raw bones keeps our dogs, especially the puppies and adolescents, occupied. However, feeding bones too often, or daily, may lead to excessive tightness of the chewing muscles.

So yes, because I have seen the damage and devastation that chewing bones can cause, I will go on record and say that bones are best avoided as chews for dogs regardless of whether the bones are cooked or raw, and regardless of how "natural" some people claim it is for dogs to chew bones. Most bones are dangerous for dogs because they can cause certain health problems. While not all pet experts agree on this topic, most veterinary health professionals can tell you plenty of bone-related horror stories. The longtime assumption that bones are appropriate canine treats is off track. Cooked bones are the riskiest.

Some bone products are specifically created to promote and support the dental health of your dog. They are manufactured in a way that allows them to help remove food particles and other debris from your dogs teeth as they chew. An extra benefit is that they can help freshen your dogs breath and soothe its gums.

These bones are especially helpful for puppies who are teething or dogs that are hyper chewers. Some synthetic bones and chews are more suitable for certain types of dogs. For instance, breeds with sharp canines, who are prone to aggressive chewing will be less mentally stimulated by a brittle natural chew and would benefit more from a long-lasting, durable synthetic dog bone.
