I believe that hard plastic or nylon chews, sterilized bones, cow hooves and antlers are too hard to be safe for most dogs.

Hard chews such as deer antlers can also cause bleeding in the mouth or internally if they splinter and blockages if swallowed, two more reasons to avoid them.

A broken tooth is extremely painful and can sometimes become abscessed.

Deer Antler

Antlers make an excellent french bulldog chew toy because they are made of a bony material… You can even wash the antler in warm, soapy water to keep it clean and fresh. Just be sure to take the the antler away from once it gets worn down to a small enough size where they could swallow it.

Avoiding Health Complications from Antlers

Antlers that break or splinter can get lodged in your dog's mouth, throat, or intestines, causing dangerous blockages that could require emergency surgery.

While most veterinarians advise staying away from antlers for dogs, if you do choose to give your dog an antler, it is a good idea to supervise him while your dog chews on it (or any chew toy).

On the surface, antlers for dogs seem like the perfect object for our pets to chew on. Antlers do not appear to splinter as easily as bones or other toys; they last a long time, saving you money on chew toys for powerful chewers; and they appeal to our sense of what is “natural” for our dogs.
