According to the official breed clubs, Maltese are "supposed" to stand about 7-8 inches at the shoulder and weigh 4-7 lbs. But many individuals are smaller than 4 lbs (not good for overall health) and many individuals are larger than 7 lbs (safer, sturdier family pets).

Another of the Maltese's family-friendly traits is that it's typically safe for allergy sufferers. Although many people assume they're allergic to dog hair or fur, it's often the dander produced by the dog that's the problem. Dander is sort of like dandruff -- dry skin that flakes off, becomes airborne, and is an allergen.

Maltipoo dogs are excellent dogs for families with older children who are respectful and gentle. Like all dogs, Maltipoos will need to be properly socialized and children should be taught how to handle these dogs gently.

Maltese are known to be healthy little dogs and unlike many other pure breeds, they don't seem to be affected by common illnesses that plague other dogs. However, any health issues reported to the Breeders Association were minor and therefore do not merit a lot of concern.

The Maltese are very people-centered and are friendly towards most strangers. They are family friendly and do well in homes with older children. While these dogs can be friendly towards young children as well, their small size also makes them prone to injury when mishandled.

A good family dog, Maltese are lively, playful, vigorous, and they generally enjoys learning tricks. They can be snappy with raucous children. The petite build of the Maltese belies its fearless presence. Highly alert, the Maltese elicits a flurry of barking in response to unfamiliar noises.

The Maltese is a small hypoallergenic dog breed, well known for its lively, playful nature. Bred as a companion dog, this small non-shedding dog grows a long, silky coat of hair (not fur) that doesnt shed, making it one of the best dogs for people with allergies.
