In general, Newfoundland dogs are not aggressive. As a matter of
fact, they are well known to be one of the most gentle and loving
dog breeds around. They are often chosen as family pets and
companions for children due to their placid, patient, and gentle
nature. I have never seen of heard of an aggressive newfie.

Some male Newfoundlands are aggressive with other male dogs, and a very few may be dominant-aggressive toward people.

Excessive shyness is also seen.

Though good-natured, the Newfoundland must learn his manners, but he is not a pushover to train.
