Problems with Laser Pointers Due to the potential for eye damage and burns, laser pointers can be dangerous for people as well as dogs. Class II are safer than class IIIA laser pointers but either can cause damage to a dog's eyes if they are shone into them for even a few seconds. This is most commonly done on accident, but the risk remains.

Nowadays, English pointers are known for being one of the most versatile, hard-working, and popular pointing breeds. They excel in field trials, but with their dynamism and ambition, they also do well in dog sports, including agility, canicross, and obedience. At home, English pointers are loving, loyal, and sweet-tempered.

Pointers are extremely high energy dogs The pointer is an extremely high energy dog breed, and they need to spend several hours each day walking, running and exercising. If you are unable to provide at least two hours of energetic, varied exercise per day for your dog and ideally more, the pointer would not be a good choice for you.

English Pointers are athletic dogs who need regular opportunities to vent their energy and gallop. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored, which dogs usually express by barking and destructive chewing. Bored Pointers have chewed through drywall and ripped the stuffing out of sofas.

Good-natured and adaptable, but primarily bred to be a hunting dog, the German Shorthaired Pointer has a high energy level and belongs with an equally athletic owner who will take him running, biking, or hiking. A walk around the block is barely a warm-up for a vigorous German Shorthaired Pointer.

Pointers generally do well with other dogs and other pets, especially if they're raised with them.

Pointers are strong and energetic with a mind of their own.

They're not a good choice for first-time dog owners or people who aren't strong enough to handle them and give them the exercise they need.

Pointers are known to be well-balanced, social and placid dogs by nature which is why they have consistently remained a popular choice as family pets. They are loyal, gentle and extremely tolerant more especially when they are around children.

A pointer from a working line may be too active and high strung to make a good family pet. Some are strong willed and stubborn. Many pointers, however, are raised for show, and dogs from these lines can make great family pets that are patient with children, good with other animals and calm within the home.

Under the right conditions, however, English pointers can make a good pets as well as gun dogs. They don't require much grooming and they get along well with people and other dogs, and can be trained to live with cats. "Pointers long to be full-fledged family members," says the AKC, "and early socialization and training will make that possible."

Although the German shorthaired pointer is a friendly dog, he's too active for toddlers and very young children. His constant exuberance combined with high energy means little ones are easily knocked over. For older kids, he's a best friend, always ready for play and affection. He also serves as a good watchdog, protecting your home and hearth.
