Basically because of their physical strength, resistance to pain, temperament, courage, and loyalty, these breeds are sought after as guard dogs and one of the most popular guard dog breeds is the Giant Schnauzer. When properly trained, they make excellent pets that are reliable with children and respectful with boundaries.

Schnauzers, Giant, Standard, or Miniature. The Giant and Standard Schnauzers are capable of stopping an intruder and the Miniature is equally protective and can deliver a discouraging bite. As in all protection breeds, the pet bred Miniatures may be too soft and sweet to be a good guard dog, but some lines are very working type in temperament.

Standard Schnauzers were originally bred to be ratters, guard dogs, and all-purpose dogs on German farms. Their versatility, medium size, protective nature, and love of family make them an excellent companion dog breed.

Instinctually a Standard Schnauzer is a guard dog and vocal. This breed will alert you with its bark; it is not friendly with strangers and will not approach them. Early socialization with family pets will help the Schnauzer to accept other animals in the household and under its guardianship rule.

Standard Schnauzers are watchful dogs who let their family (and the neighborhood) know when strangers and delivery people approach the house. Though not as intimidating as their Giant cousins, Standard Schnauzers can be ferocious guard dogs if they sense their families are in danger.

What I can tell you though for certain is that he is DEFINITELY a good guard dog! He is extremely vocal when people come to the door, but once they have been invited in and he knows they're friend and not foe, the barking very quickly subsides.

Training a Standard Schnauzer To Be a Watch Dog Lots of people get a pet dog because they want extra security around their households. A guard dog, or a dog that will really stop an intruder, generally takes unique breeding and training, but there are many dogs that are outstanding watch dogs.

The best Standard Schnauzers are versatile working dogs, capable of learning a great deal. But they have an independent mind of their own and are not pushovers to raise and train. Some Standard Schnauzers are willful and dominant (they want to be the boss) and will make you prove that you can make them do things.
