If you're thinking about giving your dog rawhide chew toys, be sure to check with your veterinarian about which ones are safe and appropriate for your dog. These toys may pose choking hazards, so give them to your dog only when you can supervise them. Many rawhides are byproducts of the cruel international fur trade. For a humane alternative, consider toys made of very hard rubber, which are safer and last longer.

When considering whether a dog chew or dog toy is safe, remember strong chemical smells indicate residual chemicals. Brightly dyed fabrics may contain toxic ingredients and leach dye when wet. (Fabric dyes arent tested for consumption.) Avoid toys treated with fire retardants or stain guard, as they may contain formaldehyde and other chemicals.

Too small and the
dog
will swallow it. Other than that, most
wood
chew
toys
are quite
safe
for
dogs
. Just be mindful and you'll be fine.

If they wear down to a size where they can be swallowed, toss it out Despite their name, most wooden dog toys are not 100% wood. You see, to create a safer stick, manufacturers mixed wood with synthetic materials. The result was a wooden toy that does not splinter and is safe to chew on.

Here are some of the safest toys for dogs: Rubber Toys Hard rubber toys (like KONG) toys are a great option because they are very durable, but your dog can still chew on them. Rope Toys Woven rope toys are generally safe for dogs because even if he chews off some of the fibers, theres little risk of choking.

When the Healthy Stuff team ran their tests, they uncovered a few surprising facts: 45% of products had detectable levels of hazardous toxins. 48% percent contained detectable levels of lead. About half of the products had lead levels higher than the allowable standard for childrens toys.

Put all of your dogs chews and chew toys through the tests below to figure out whether a particular object is likely to be safe for your dog to chew on: Hardness: Apply the thumbnail test: If the toy doesn't give a little bit when you press it with your thumbnail, then it's likely too hard for your dog and could break their teeth.

In 2008 and again in 2009, several of the Melissa & Doug toys were recalled due to the presence of a heavy metal found: barium. According to Health Canada, exposure to toxic forms of barium can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle paralysis or even death (though these cases are rare in the event of high levels of exposure).

Not all dog toys on the market are durable or safe. In fact, just like childrens toys come with warnings and safety labels, so should the toys made for pups, but sadly, they dont. If you dont have experience with dogs or with which play items could be bad for your pooch, then youre in the right place.
