  • Someone can be allergic to dogs but not cats . Even though both allergies are triggered by pet dander, the chemical composition of the proteins causing the allergy is different. Having an allergy means having an overactive immune system. When your immune system comes into contact with the allergen, it releases a flood of histamines.

Cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies. But contrary to what you might think, it's not the fur or hair that's the real problem. People with cat allergies are really allergic to proteins in the cat's saliva, urine, and dander (dried flakes of skin).
