In 2010, meetings began with AKC to include the Miniature Australian Shepherd and in 2011 they were accepted in to AKC under the new name "Miniature American Shepherds." And now, July 1, 2015, the Miniature American Shepherd is fully recognized as an American Kennel Club (AKC) Herding Breed. And it comes full circle!
Contrary to some miniaturized pure dog breeds, the mini Australian Shepherd is actually a breed of its own. The American Kennel Club (AKC) and United Kennel Club (UKC) recognize the miniature Australian Shepherd as the miniature American Shepherd.
Example: Miniature Australian Shepherd is not recognized by the AKC, CKC or UKC. It is called a Miniature American Shepherd. Example: Labradoodle is not a recognized breed by the AKC, CKC, or UKC. It will be recognized as Other-Mixed or under one of the 3 options from the National Breed Registries above.
Not to mention working dogs such as the German shepherd, Doberman and Rottweiler, or popular companion dogs such as the Great Dane, boxer, Miniature Schnauzer, American Eskimo dog, and Pomeranian. Germany keeps strict records and allowances of who can use, own and breed certain dogs.
