The main viruses and bacteria that cause URI in cats are highly contagious. An infected cat will shed contagious particles in saliva or secretions from the nose or eyes. Susceptible cats can get an infection by direct contact with another infected cat or by environmental exposure to objects that have been contaminated with infectious secretions such as food and water bowls, litter boxes, toys, and bedding.

One of the dog diseases that can be transmitted to humans is rabies. Rabies is a dangerous virus that can infect your cat, dog and you. An infected animal transmits the virus through a bite or scratch, or through contaminated saliva coming in contact with mucus membranes or a fresh, open wound, according to the ASPCA. Bats, raccoons, foxes and skunks are the most common carriers.

However, some cats and dogs are more inclined to contract a URI than others. For instance, kittens and puppies are more likely to get a URI, as are older pets with weaker immune systems. Stress increases the chances of getting an upper respiratory infection, and certain breeds of cats, including Persians, are also more vulnerable. 5.

Salmonella is more commonly found in cats that feed on raw meat or wild birds and animals, so owners can reduce the risk of salmonellosis in themselves and their cats by keeping cats indoors and feeding them cooked or commercially processed food. Wearing gloves when cleaning litterboxes or gardening (in case outdoor cats have defecated in the soil) and washing hands thoroughly after these activities is also recommended.

However, keep in mind that URI infections are highly contagious between animals. Thus, you should notify your vet prior to arriving if you suspect your cat has a URI, so they can take necessary precautions to keep other animals at the hospital safe, especially those that may have a compromised immune system.

While coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mostly spreads from person to person, it can also spread from people to animals. COVID-19 is a type of coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses. Some cause cold-like illnesses in people, and others cause illness in animals, such as bats. In addition, some coronaviruses infect only animals.

YES! People may think because dogs usually catch respiratory infections or kennel cough from kennels, that it must come from dogs. But, in actual fact, dogs absolutely can catch the infection from cats too!

Most URIs can be treated at home, and often your veterinarian will not ask for your cat to come to the clinic. After all, your cat could then spread it to other cats there. However, if the symptoms appear to be severe (your cat is coughing, has stopped eating, or is having trouble breathing), your vet will want to examine your cat.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a relatively common occurrence in dogs and cats. Infections in the urinary tract can occur in the bladder or can become serious and involve the kidneys. Most pets with urinary tract infections will have fairly classic symptoms and most UTI's can be treated relatively easily.
