Humans rely on vision, while cats and dogs use smell and sight to assess their surroundings. Let your cat and dog recognize and accept each other, so they can get along easily. You can swap their bedding, or rub a towel on your cat and place it next to your dog, and vice versa. This can speed up their process of accepting one another.

Contrary to popular belief, certain breeds of cats and dogs don't typically get along better than others.

According to Galaxy and Sandor, it's more important to take their personalities and energy levels into account.

If a dog is aggressive and territorial, it won't be a good fit in a household with a skittish cat.

Cats and dogs are much more likely to fight or be unhappy if you try to force them together suddenly. Keep them in separate rooms and out of sight of one another until they are both calm. Begin mixing the animals smells by stroking the cat then stroking the dog and vice versa (with pets in separate rooms). 2

Because most puppies think cats are great. And the very first reaction of many pups to a cat, is to lunge toward this potential new furry friend. This is normally in an enthusiastic attempt to play. Cats are usually less easily impressed.

Puppy is probably very excited, but keep him as calm as possible and let him know with a strong verbal correction that chasing cats is a bad idea. Confine the puppy to a crate or specific area of the house so that the cat feels secure in his territory. It might be months before you can leave them alone unsupervised.
