The only way to "cure" Cushing's disease is to remove the adrenal tumor if the disease is adrenal-dependent and the tumor hasn't spread, says Stohlman. However, because of the complexity and risks of the surgery, most cases are treated with medication.

The oral medications mitotane or trilostane are given to suppress the body's production of the hormone cortisol once unacceptable symptoms of pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease are present.

The appropriate dose is determined by a dog's response to the medications, but lifelong treatment will be required.
