Denamarin is meant to be used on an empty stomach, but there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that dogs will vomit or not want to eat once they've taken the medication on the empty stomach. I'd question your vet about the ursodiol, and consider discontinuing it temporarily. I'd also do a 3-4 day trial where you give the denamarin with food.

However, in clinical trails these symptoms were observed only in primates. According to Drugs.com, dogs showed no ill effects, even when given a dosage 80 times higher than the amount in Denamarin for a period of 26 weeks. VCA Animal Hospitals states that mild digestive upset may occur in dogs taking milk thistle, the herb containing silybin.

SAM-e has also been tested rigorously in both cats and dogs and has been shown to have no ill effects when administered in the concentration used in Denamarin. This means that neither ingredient in Denamarin should be capable of harming your dog, even when taken with other supplements recommended for liver support.

The medication itself isn't known for causing stomach ulcers. Blood in vomit could be due to stomach ulcers, esophageal erosions / ulcers, swallowing of blood from the oral cavity and then vomiting it up, a growth in the stomach that is bleeding or from something in the stomach

Denamarin is a combination of Sylimarin (milk thistle) and SAMe. Denamarin is considered extremely safe if administered in the recommended dosage. One important point to make is it should be administered on an empty stomach. It has been known to cause diarrhea in some cases. SAMe can cause some dogs to vomit. But you can switch, with the advice of your vet, to standard milk thistle, liquid vitamin E and a B complex with C.

What are the side effects of Denamarin? Though there are some known side effects of silybin, such as itching, gastrointestinal distress, and headaches- these side effects have only been observed in primates. When administered to dogs, on the other hand, the ingredient seems to be completely safe. Click to see full answer.

While best known for supporting the liver in dogs and cats, research has shown that the S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) in Denamarin may help support cognitive function in dogs 6. Your veterinarian can evaluate the length of support needed through follow-up examinations, blood work, and/or other laboratory work.
