Allergic rhinitis, or hay fever symptoms, include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose and itchy eyes. Its the nasal congestion that can be a real problem, particularly if you have sleep apnea. Nonallergic Rhinitis This isn't technically an allergy as it doesn't involve an immune response and doesn't cause inflammation. It may, however, have similar symptoms as allergies and, as such, can have similar sleep-impairing effects.

Allergies to food, chemicals or toxins can also cause disturbances in breathing and sleep patterns. Anti-histamine medications can help control the allergic reaction and provide relief. Dogs find it difficult to breathe in warm and humid weather and this too can result in sleep apnea. If your pet has sleep problems in the summer, you should let him sleep in an air-conditioned room.

Allergic rhinitis is when pollen, molds, pet dander, or other allergens are inhaled and then irritate the nasal passages. This leads to watery eyes, runny nose, congestion, and sneezing, and can possibly lead to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Allergies can be a cause of sleep apnea in any form (food, seasonal, or skin) as each can lead to obstructions in the dog's snout and throat that cause breathing problems at night. This is an easily fixed scenario as there are solutions already in place to help dog allergies.

This report describes a case of reversible obstructive sleep apnea caused by occupational exposure to an inhaled allergen, guar gum powder. The patient, a pet food plant employee, also experienced severe cough, rhinitis, and conjunctivitis. Skin tests confirmed the specific guar allergy. Pharyngeal cross-sectional area was smaller than normal.
