Science Behind Dogs Hearing Loud Music Similar to humans, a dog's hearing structure begins with sound waves that cause the eardrums to vibrate, which is then transmitted as movement of the teensy weensy bones in the middle of the ear. At this point, vibrations are sent to the cochlea - or the fluid-filled part of the inner ear.

The most common cause of noise induced hearing loss in humans and dogs is injury to the hair cells inside the inner ear. This can occur after exposure to loud noises like that stereo turned up too loud, or even a kennel or shelter where there are a lot of barking dogs.

Most dogs cannot hear the low, low bass, but they can hear pitches way higher than we could imagine hearing. If you want to train your pooch to respond to a certain sound or song, make sure it isn't in a range that could cause damage.

While a young human can listen to sounds at 0 decibels (dB) the measure of intensity or loudness of a sound dogs can hear low sounds at -5 to 15 dB per the AKC. It might seem that your dog is psychic and knows when your spouse is returning home from work minutes before they pull into the driveway.

They
can
discern sounds down to -15 decibels. Because of this, it makes sense to take the same precautions with your
dog's hearing
as you would with your own! Most
dogs
naturally shy away from
loud
noises.
