Although some owners leaves lights on for their dogs to see in the dark, it is true that dogs have much better vision in low light than humans.

This means that lights shouldn't stop your dog from being able to sleep, but it might be an idea to consider leaving some of the house in darkness for them.

Try having them sleep with a light on and then with it off. Whatever works best, is what you should do until they grow older. If you move the puppy crate into your bedroom and place one of your old used t-shirts inside their crate. This may provide them enough comfort and security, that they are happy to sleep with the light off. It’s worth a try!

Lights on or off? Some puppies and dogs prefer a night-light. They find it comforting. But for others, the light can provide too much stimulation and keep them awake and busy. For those dogs, make the house dark and quiet. Too hot or too cold? Keep the temperature comfortable in the room where your pet sleeps.

If you are a light sleeper: Dogs often move around in their sleep, act out their dreams and even snore! If you’re a light sleeper or there is limited room in your bed, you may consider letting your dog sleep in their own bed. If you have a new dog: A new dog may need some time to adjust before they are ready to sleep in your bed.

This includes watching TV with your dogs in the room. Use dim red lights after sunset. Red light has the least damaging impact on melatonin. Swap out your lighting to incandescent bulbs with a yellow, orange or red filter for nighttime lighting. This isn’t the ideal option but it’s the second-best choice.

“The most common posture that dogs use to sleep is lying on their sides with their legs extended,” says Dr. Coren. This means that a dog is relaxed and comfortable and shows a level of trust with his surroundings. It depends on the location of the pineal gland in different animals, as well as the degree of reaction in production of melatonin, but still there is a degree. Lights off is good but also try to make the period of time for sleeping habitual.
