Dog and cat hookworms generally do not cause intestinal hookworm infection in humans. Some dog and cat hookworms can cause CLM in humans. For this to happen, a person's skin needs to come into direct contact with feces that are a few days old from an infected dog or cat.

Some hookworms of dogs can infect humans by penetrating the skin.

This is most likely to occur when walking barefoot on the beach, working in the garden or other areas where pets may deposit feces.

One species of hookworm that infects dogs is known to develop in the human intestine, too, where it may cause disease.
