Ibuprofen (Advil / Motrin): The number one hazard for dogs is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen can kill pets and should never be given to dogs or cats. At even higher doses, dogs develop nervous signs including depression, seizures and coma. How do I know if my dog ate ibuprofen?

Giving dogs ibuprofen or other OTC human medications can be extremely hazardous to a pets health. You should always consult a veterinarian before administering any nonprescribed medications. Ibuprofen inhibits COX enzymes, which normally have a protective effect on the mucosal barrier of the gastrointestinal tract, keep blood flowing normally to the kidneys, and help regulate platelet function.

Prolonged use of ibuprofen can also trigger depression of the central nervous system (CNS), cardiac arrest, hypotension, ataxia, as well as seizures in dogs. Dogs that accidentally ingest ibuprofen at toxic levels should be treated as an emergency, because high levels of ibuprofen in a dogs system is potentially lethal.

However, pet owners should never give their dog ibuprofen for pain management, as it can cause many serious health problems, including stomach ulceration (which can lead to a fatal stomach rupture), kidney failure, seizures, and coma.

Ibuprofen poisoning occurs when a dog ingests a toxic dose of ibuprofen, either through misuse or by accident. Although relatively safe in humans, ibuprofen and other NSAIDs can be extremely harmful to dogs. Ibuprofen poisoning is very common, and even small doses can cause adverse effects and poisoning.

This, combined with the fact that dogs metabolize and excrete NSAIDs differently than people, means that even relatively low doses of ibuprofen can lead to life-threatening side effects. Alternatives to Ibuprofen for Dogs. Never (EVER!) give ibuprofen or any other over-the-counter NSAID to your dog without first talking to your veterinarian.

For dogs, ibuprofen can easily exceed toxic levels. Ibuprofen has a narrow margin of safety in dogs. Signs of toxicosis can occur when as little as half a 200 mg pill is given to a 25 pound dog.The most common cause of ibuprofen toxicity is a well-meaning owner trying to alleviate pain in his dog.
