CBD and Pets: All Your Questions Answered

As loving pet parents, we always want the best for our companions ā€“ everything from what they eat to how theyā€™re trained to the toys they play with. We are responsible for ensuring their well-being, and who is more deserving of quality care and products than our best four-legged friends? At Holistic Hound, we care about your pets like our own ā€“ which is why we created our innovative line of CBD and functional mushroom products. If you havenā€™t heard of these kinds of products for pets, we know how it can sound. Mushrooms? CBD? For dogs?! But fear not. Weā€™re here to decode the often confusing information surrounding CBD and tackle the most common questions we hear in the industry.

FIRST THINGS FIRST. WHAT IS CBD OIL?

CBD stands for Cannabidiol, and it is one of the many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. Donā€™t worry, itā€™s completely non-intoxicating! CBD oil comes from the flowers and leaves of the hemp plant and is well-known for its many potential health benefits. Often times CBD is sold for consumption in a tincture; when itā€™s sold in this form, it is diluted with a carrier oil (such as coconut or hemp seed oil) for easier administration. The two types of CBD youā€™ll likely see most frequently are ā€œfull-spectrumā€ or ā€œbroad-spectrumā€ products. Full-spectrum products are ones that have a fuller profile of cannabinoids, which includes (but will never exceed 0.3%) tetrahydrocannabinol, otherwise known as THC. We typically associate THC with the ā€œhighā€ users get from cannabis, but at a 0.3% trace level, it will never produce a ā€œhighā€ or intoxicating effect. However, if youā€™d rather scrap the THC entirely, rest assured that broad-spectrum products will have undetectable THC and just offer you the goods: CBD.

Holistic Hound uses USDA certified organic hemp grown in nutrient-rich Colorado & Vermont soil. It is GMO- free, and every batch is third-party tested for potency and purity. Plus, we always post our test results on our website so you can check them out for yourself.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF CBD OIL?

It has been researched that cannabinoids interact with what is called the endocannabinoid system. Dogs and cats both have these systems, and it plays a big role in maintaining the natural balance in their body. This, in turn, helps maintain their overall health.

Below are some potential benefits of hemp-derived CBD oil for pets:

  • Helps maintain normal emotional balance and calmness
  • Supports immune system function
  • Supports a healthy inflammatory response
  • Helps maintain a healthy intestinal tract
  • Antioxidant protection

Heidi Hill, a certified Homeopath with 17 years of experience in animal health and nutrition, created and formulated our full-spectrum hemp oil for pets. Through personal experience, she discovered that CBD helped relieve Pearl, her senior husky, from aches and discomforts. It had an incredible impact on her quality of life throughout her final years.

The mission of Holistic Hound is to help improve the health, wellness, and vitality of our companions using a holistic approach.

HOW DO I USE CBD OIL FOR MY PET(S)?

If youā€™re looking to maintain your petā€™s health or are seeking ways to potentially improve it, incorporating high-quality CBD oil into their routines may be a way to help. High-quality CBD oil means it comes from organic hemp, is toxin-free, and actually contains CBD. Because the CBD industry is rapidly growing, many companies can claim they have CBD in their products when, in reality, they have much lower than the amount claimed, or none at all. Always research the companies youā€™re buying CBD from and make sure they have their third-party test results (called Certificate of Analysis, or COAs) available for customers to view so you can be confident youā€™re buying CBD with the quality, safety, and consistency your pet deserves.

When you do find a quality product, make sure to start slow and at a low dosage. This is true of introducing anything new into your petā€™s diet, and itā€™s true for CBD as well. Talking with your veterinarian beforehand never hurts either, particularly if you have a sensitive pet or they are on medications or have a known medical condition. You can gradually increase the dosage until you reach your desired outcome. This may differ from pet to pet ā€“ some may need more than the recommended dosage, and some may need less. CBD is non-intoxicating, so donā€™t worry if you exceed the recommendations.

Speaking of recommendations, are those important? Short answer, yes. Itā€™s another way to tell if a company is reputable. Trusted companies always provide recommended dosing instructions on all their products to give you some idea of how to use it if youā€™re unfamiliar. Keep in mind the recommended dosage can vary from product to product because different companies uniquely formulate their products for specific reasons. At Holistic Hound, we help our customers give the exact amount of CBD they want by providing an easy-to-measure dropper with all our CBD tinctures.

IS CBD OIL LEGAL?

Hemp-derived CBD products are legal on the federal level if they donā€™t contain more than 0.3% THC but are still illegal under some state laws. Our USDA certified hemp derived full spectrum CBD contains 0.3% or less THC, and our broad-spectrum oils contain undetectable THC.

Holistic Hound is a certified member of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC). NASC is a highly respected organization that works closely with federal and state regulators to ensure companion animal health productsā€™ safety, fidelity, and quality. This matches the mission and values of Holistic Hound, as itā€™s our mission to help improve the health, wellness, and quality of life of our favorite companions.

Ā IS CBD OIL SAFE FOR PETS?

The hemp plant has only trace amounts of THC and is very high inĀ CBDĀ andĀ CBG, while the marijuana plant is the exact opposite. THC is the chemical that makes people ā€œhigh.ā€ It is a chemical that the human body can biologically process, but pets cannot metabolize it the same way which makes it very dangerous to pets. Our products come from hemp plants and experts agree that CBD and CBG is safe, non-toxic, non-intoxicating, and well-tolerated.

That being said, it is always a good idea to get a second opinion from your veterinarian if you have hesitations or if your pet has other conditions that need to be considered.

At Holistic Hound, your petā€™s safety is our top priority. Our CBD products are vet-formulated to ensure the utmost quality for your beloved pets and to provide them greater health and wellness throughout every stage of their life.Ā  Check out our products, or contact us with any questions, concerns, or product recommendations. Weā€™d love to help in any way we can!
