Newborn puppies move erratically and make high-pitched sounds.

These behaviors mimic the actions of prey animals, such as mice.

Although any dam can cannibalize her pups, these dogs may instinctively be compelled to eat their puppies if they fail to recognize them as their own.

t’s not specific to any breeds and female dogs of any pure or mixed breeds can eat their own puppies. That being said, it may or may not be something that’s inherited. Also, may or may not happen again from one litter to another.

In Normal delivery, dogs can sense their hormone on the newborn pup. However, Many dogs are unable to recognize their hormonal sense of babies after birth. Such dogs consider their babies predators in their environment, and they will eat their puppies. This condition is most common in dogs who birth via C-sections.

By Staff Writer Last Updated March 24, 2020 Dogs eat their newborn puppies when they do not recognize the puppies as their own, because the pain from mastitis and suckling provokes aggression, or because a puppy is stillborn or unhealthy. However, cannibalism rarely occurs among canines.

While it can and does happen for the reasons explained below, it is in the minority of births. Mother dogs have a protective instinct over their newborn puppies. While it may sound counter-intuitive, most reasons why dogs eat their young are to do with survival.

The unique thing about mama pandas is that they don’t kill and eat their own babies, but nothing better still. Since pandas usually have twins or more babies, and the mom can only care for one cub. The mom will choose one cub to take care of and ignore the others.

Which animals eat their own babies? Indeed, mother bears, felines, canids, primates, and many species of rodents—from rats to prairie dogs—have all been seen killing and eating their young. Insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and birds also have been implicated in killing, and sometimes devouring, the young of their own kind.

Short answer: Researchers don’t know the exact reasons why animals sometimes kill their own babies, but it’s generally believed that it might satisfy the energy and nutritional requirements of the parent, make the parent more attractive to potential mates, and help in getting rid of offspring that are sick or take too long to mature. In some cases, animals eat their eggs to protect them from predators.
