Because of the high-risk factor, all dogs and cats travelling from this country must spend three months in a government-approved kennel in South Africa immediately prior to departure for export and 120 days on arrival at an Australian quarantine station. Animals must have been in South Africa for at least six months, more than nine months old and not be more than six weeks pregnant.

Cats and dogs may now be transhipped via Sydney to the Post-Entry Quarantine Facility in Melbourne, under limited circumstances and subject to eligibility. This temporary arrangement between the Department and Qantas airlines is available to cat and dog owners when there is no option for them to fly directly to Melbourne.

Who must go into quarantine. If a public health authority directs you to, you must go into a mandatory 14-day period of quarantine. During this time they will monitor you. You will need to go into quarantine if you: have returned home from overseas; have been in primary close contact with someone who has confirmed or probable COVID-19

Can You Visit Your Dog in Quarantine? When the standard quarantine stay for dogs in Australia was longer, it was possible to visit your pet during their stay in quarantine. However, since the reduction of the standard quarantine stay to 10 days, visits are no longer permitted.

While the process to move a dog to Australia does take 190 days when it's all said and done, your dog will only need to stay in a quarantine facility for 10 days, and that occurs at the very end, after she has arrived in Australia.

Cats and dogs must arrive directly into Melbourne International Airport where we will transfer them to the post entry quarantine facility. They cannot land in another Australian airport and travel to Melbourne on an Australian domestic flight.
