Dogs actually aren't normally 'bedazzled' when you take their collar off. Dogs, like us, get used to things, and most dogs simply accept collars as normalcy.

There are many reasons why a dog could get excited the moment their collar gets taken off. It could be because of positive association, or because the collar was too tight on them, or your dog could be just reflecting and mimicking your own excitement.

Dogs lick their owners as a form of affection. When you're holding the collar near to their face (having just taken them off) it's just natural and convenient to lick them. Excitement. Dogs learn by association and yours may have identified the collar as a trigger.

In fact, most dogs despise collars and that is because of what they associate their collar with. The size of the collar is important for their comfort. Just as humans grow, so do dogs. ... If your dog is not doing anything wrong, they will feel more fearful of the collar, than if they actually are being abused.
