How to React to a Dog Trying to Understand Another Animal Put a movie on, and see if they both snuggle up to watch it! Pet both animals to show they are a part of the gang. Let the animals be alone with each other, and spy on a camera to see if they're talking. Give them treats for effort!

Yes, dogs can understand each other via body language. Because they don't use words as a way of communication, they can actually understand each other no matter where they're born. It is pretty obvious that dogs speak in a different native tongue than us.

Just like their human owners, dogs like to talk.

However, unlike body signals, barking can represent different things to different dogs.

The pitch or volume of the bark will increase with the dog's level of emotion.

And it could be that artificial intelligence is better at distinguishing dog barks than humans are.

Yes, dogs understand each other through barking. They communicate through barks to both people and other dogs. It does not necessarily have meaning like the communication between people but their barks represent some type of communication that expresses their current emotional state.

Research shows that although dogs are capable of sniffing out some cancers, it's often about body language. Similarly, dogs can recognize when a household pet isn't doing well either, whether a smell changes in the other dog's body composition or the other dog is moving less. Further, dogs are capable of smelling pheromones.

Truth is, when you get to understand how your dog communicates, it makes it easier for you to handle them.

I love the question! I think the answer is even though we sort of know how well they understand each other's barks based on their behaviors, we'll never really know to what degree they're accurately communicating with each other. On accuracy, I of...

Dogs can understand each other, although they do not have a structured language like humans do. Dogs communicate using a range of vocal cues, such as whining, barking, and growling, as well as physical signals, like the position of their tails and facial expressions. Other dogs can understand these signals, and sometimes humans can too.

But do those dogs really understand human language, and if so, what are the limits on their language learning? A burgeoning field of scientific research is beginning to find some answers.
