Do you need to feed your older dog with multivitamins and supplements? The answer is yes as having specific nutrients are extremely important for senior dogs. Our furry companion needs additional care as they aged. As they get older they are prone to degenerative diseases that are more likely to affect them.

If your older dog suffers from blood flow problems, metabolism issues or a disease such as osteoarthritis, they could benefit from vitamins and nutrient supplements. Moreover, if their overall health, breed or age mean that they are likely to suffer from any particular illnesses, vitamins can be a very useful tool for prevention.

You must choose a multivitamin that is made especially for dogs. In some cases, you can choose a multivitamin made for dogs with special needs, such as joint support or senior age. Some vets recommend products such as Pet-Tinic or Nutri-Cal for dogs not getting enough nutrients.

Older dogs need all the same vitamins that younger dogs do
, including vitamin A, calcium, iron, and more. However, there are a few nutrients that older dogs need even more than their younger counterparts. These include things like: Omega fatty acids for brain health.

Like most things in life, vitamins and minerals are not wholly bad or wholly good. There are some instances when dogs should receive supplements. Here are a few: Your dog has been diagnosed with a vitamin/mineral deficiency or a disease that responds to supplementation (e.g., zinc-responsive dermatosis or vitamin E supplementation for osteoarthritis).

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs): Omega-3 and Omega-6 are known as essential fatty acids because our pets' bodies cannot manufacture them they must take them in along with their food, or as supplements. Weve long known that adding oil can make a pets coat shinier, which is why there have always been products in pet stores to squirt into food dishes.

Senior dogs sometimes do not eat as much as they used to. If that is your dog, food with higher amounts of vitamins and minerals is a good idea. This information is not always listed on product labels, but foods marked "all life stages" will often have more vitamins and minerals than adult foods. 4.
