Do snakes smell like watermelon?
The misconception may have arisen from the Southern melon varietal known as the rattlesnake watermelon.
When asked what the snakes do smell like, one experienced woodsman answered, "Rattlesnakes." And then there's elephant pee, which allegedly smells like black licorice.
There is no proof that this is true.
Dogs also "express" their anal sacs when they are scared, which is perfectly normal, if a bit odorous.
Anal gland secretions have a distinct smell that many people describe as fishy.
If your dog smells like fish, chances are there may be something going on with her anal glands.
For one thing, they possess up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in us.
And the part of a dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is, proportionally speaking, 40 times greater than ours.
Dogs' noses also function quite differently than our own.
"Their breath has that sweet mother's milk smell because their mouths are clean and haven't yet developed any bacteria or plaque, which typically causes odors." He adds that some people may not experience this sweet smell because of their puppy's health or particular habits.
Individual dogs also have specific spots where they like to be petted; common areas are the base of the tail, under the chin or on the back of the neck where the collar hits.
Most dogs dislike being touched on top of the head and on the muzzle, ears, legs, paws and tail.
That is because it is in their nature to sleep in a pile on top of each other and it's when they feel most secure and comfortable - snuggled up against their littermates.
A recent survey found that as many as 50 percent of dog owners let their dogs sleep on the bed.
Most lumps are fatty tumors, though.
These are benign, meaning not cancerous.
Fewer than half of lumps and bumps you find on a dog are malignant, or cancerous.
Still, they can look the same from the outside, so it's hard to tell.
Dog poop has four main "C" characteristics: color, content, consistency, and coating.
The color of healthy dog poop should be chocolate brown.
Most people won't see much of anything inside the poop without a microscope.
Healthy dog poop should also be a little firm in consistency, like play dough.
