No Obligation To Give Annual Dog Vaccines. The AAHA and WSAVA guidelines are just that guidelines. Theres no law or formal requirement for vets to follow their suggested schedules for annual dog vaccines. But many dog owners seem to be under the impression that core vaccines are required that theyre a legal obligation. Theyre not!

The core vaccines include the DHLPP (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvo, and parainfluenza). Your pup will also need a rabies vaccination, which is usually around $1520. What shots does my 1 year old dog need?

Once a dog reaches adulthood, the list of annual shots is more manageable. In fact, if your vet doesnt recommend that your animal receive any of the non-core vaccines, then its entirely possible for your animal to go three years in between receiving core vaccinations.

When your dog was younger, you likely visited your veterinarian regularly for de-worming and vaccinations. Dont slack off as your dog grows older. You should already be using year-round heartworm prevention and good flea and tick products. Fleas and ticks are ubiquitous external parasites that demand control.

First year puppy shots for your dog are broken down into two categories: the core and non-core vaccinations. Core shots are, in almost all cases, necessary for the long term well-being of your puppy. Theyre the vaccinations that protect them from diseases classified as high-risk and pose a threat to your puppys life.

Sometimes also referred to as DHP or DHPP. if parainfluenza is included) In order for vaccines to provide the protection puppies need, they are given every two to four weeks until they are at least 16 weeks of age. Your veterinarian will help determine the best vaccine schedule for your puppy.
