According to this report, the total first-year cost of owning a dog is $1,270 and for a cat it's $1,070. As you can see, having a pet can cost you over $1,000 in the first year, and well over $500 each additional year. Depending on the food you buy and sudden medical expenses, the costs could be much higher. =I.

PetSmart doesn't sell puppies or adult dogs at all. They contract with shelters and rescue groups to come to our stores and adopt out animals. The adoption fee varies and is based on expenses they've had getting them shots, spaying/neutering and any other medical needs.

Petco, Pets Plus Natural and PetSmart already offer dogs and cats from shelters for adoption in their stores. Go online to Petco.com or PetSmart.com and find a store near you or search for adoptable pets in your area through Petfinder.

PETsMART had decided not to sell dogs and cats because of the hundreds of thousands of animals that are euthanized each year. Instead, via PetSmart Charities it donates space inside its stores to local humane societies and animal shelters for them to display homeless animals that customers can adopt.

PetSmart does not sell dogs or puppies at any of its stores as of 2021. Instead, PetSmart encourages the adoption of dogs and puppies through annual adoption events and on its website. PetSmart also owns a non-profit animal charity PetSmart Charities, to help animals further.

Neither PetSmart nor Petco sell dogs or cats.

Stores that sold such animals sourced them from puppy mills and other now discredited places.

Both stores do provide space for adoption events to help local rescue groups and shelters find homes for their animals.
