Some medications, such as prednisone, may also lead to heavy panting in dogs.

Prednisone has side effects, and if the problem can be controlled without it, that is often the preferable choice. In the short run, depending on the dose, prednisone can cause dramatically increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, and in dogs, panting a lot at night for no particular reason.

Side effects of prednisone in dogs may include increased thirst and hunger, panting, a loss of energy, vomiting, and/or skin infections.

If your dog has been prescribed prednisone, keep close watch for any of these reactions, especially within the first few days.
