Published on Feb 20, 2013. Our 9 month old Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Barking at a bottle. As you may know the Toller has a loud piercing bark and this video doesn't even do it justice.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers can bark, just like any other dog breed, however, besides a normal barking sound, Tollers can have a high-pitched, penetrating bark that sounds like a howl or a scream when they get excited.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever was bred to mimic the actions that foxes take when they hunt birds. What does this mean, exactly? Wild foxes that live near bodies of water will naturally dash about, play, and act silly with the intent of enticing curious birds to come a little closer. When the birds get close enough, the foxes grab them!

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are a bit more reserved than Golden Retrievers around strangers. Since barking would scare away the ducks, Tollers seldom bark unless they sense danger. These are very playful dogs.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers do not generally bark a lot unless they have something urgent to tell or are left to their own devices and get bored. They are an energetic dog breed that loves life and living it, and this can include barking, but this is generally not a problem.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers Beginnings The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever learned their skills originally from foxes. The Micmac Indians in the Little River district of Novia Scotia, Canada watched as foxes would play at the waters edge which then lured ducks to come close enough so the fox could then snatch some.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a medium-sized gundog bred primarily for hunting. It is often referred to as a "toller". It is the smallest of the retrievers, and is often mistaken for a small Golden Retriever.Tollers are intelligent, eager to please, alert, and energetic. The name "toller" is derived from their ability to lure waterfowl within gunshot range.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a relatively healthy breed with very few inherited diseases. Addisons disease is an autoimmune disorder common for the breed. This is the result of the adrenal glands not producing enough cortisol, which is a hormone that stimulates eating and manages stress.

The Nova Scotia Duck-Tolling Retriever looks somewhat like a small Golden Retriever. It is a well-muscled dog that is medium to heavy boned. It has a deep chest that is well-insulated for swimming in cold water. The coat is dense, and comes in various shades of red and orange. It usually has small white markings on the feet, chest, tail tip and ...
