Installment III: Taglines – Creating a Memorable Image
What do you think of when you hear some of, in my opinion, the greatest taglines created? “It’s the real thing”, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”, “Because you’re worth it” and “Where the pets go”. Most of us easily identified the products, services and even cities these slogans represent. Why? Because they are short, catchy and convey a great message about the companies for which they were written.
A great tagline is vital to the overall marketing of a company. Paired with a memorable logo, the tagline creates the visual image of what to expect from the company, product or service. Let’s take L’Oreal as an example. “Because you’re worth it” is a remarkable tagline. It is brief, conveys an image of quality, and covers the entire product line. If you have a lot to spend or a little, you want to spend it with us because our products are so good that you should have them…after all, you’re worth it. What an image! For the industry in which they are located, that is sheer perfection.
It’s important to remember that all of your advertising, marketing and branding efforts are designed to convey an image for your pet grooming business. This is true for every business in every industry. Our tagline, “Always Amaze” was chosen because we want you, the professionals in the pet grooming business universe to always be amazed by what our product can do for you and to position you to always amaze your clients…and keep them coming back for more. When you advertise, brand or market you should focus on the image, the message and the lasting memory that will be created. Logos are designed to create a visual image. Businesses spend a great deal of time considering the colors to be used, the style to be employed and any images to be included. The tagline, often embedded in the image with the logo, should get as much attention. The Disney logo, for example, is a fantastic example of a memorable logo. That being said, most everyone associates “The Most Magical Place on Earth” as being Disney World. The tagline instantly conjures up the image of Disney and how magical the experience is when you visit. That should be the goal of your tagline….to conjure the image you want your clients and prospective clients to have of your pet grooming business.
If you are working on crafting a tagline for your pet grooming business, there are a few key things to remember. Keep it short is the top rule. In fact, try not to go beyond seven words. There is no need to use the name of the business in the tagline. After all, if you are going to have it right alongside (or over or under) the logo, the name will be there anyway. The tagline should also convey what makes your business different, unique or special. It need not say exactly what your business does, but, it should leave a lasting and positive impression.
Give thought to the message you want your business to convey. And once you come up with a tagline, try it out on a few trusted friends or confidantes. Examine their gut reactions and be sure your tagline has given you what you want. If not, keep trying out some new ideas until you find the sweet spot.
