Neither ammonia nor vinegar should be sprayed directly onto any lawn grass or landscape plants that you care about, as sufficient amounts will kill vegetation. Ammonia and vinegar are best used as dog repellents for around the perimeter of your property, forming a stinky, invisible barrier that keeps dogs away.

To deter dogs or cats, try to catch them at it and use a large water pistol to give a good hard squirt...this is more effective with cats and even better if they can't see you... it's also childishly satisfying!

Sprinkle cayenne pepper or chilli powder over the affected area. If the area is non organic ie, concrete, brick etc then wash first with vinegar or ammonia to get rid of the attractive pee scent. You can also mix the pepper / chilli with a little water and liquid soap to give it more sticking power.

To keep dogs off your lawn, try spraying a mixture of water and baking soda on your lawn, which will neutralize the smell of dog urine so that dogs are less likely to come back. You can also spray your lawn with vinegar to keep dogs away, but use it sparingly since it might damage your plants.

You could try sprinkling some of it around the base of the tree to see if it works with dogs as well. It won't harm them in any way. In case you don't know Olbas oil is the stuff you get to drip onto handkerchiefs and then you breathe in the smell to unblock your nose when you have a cold.
