When you start to house train, follow these steps: Keep the puppy on a regular feeding schedule and take away his food between meals.

Take puppy out to eliminate first thing in the morning and then once every 30 minutes to an hour.

Also, always take him outside after meals or when he wakes from a nap.

It typically takes 4-6 months for a puppy to be fully house trained, but some puppies may take up to a year. Size can be a predictor. For instance, smaller breeds have smaller bladders and higher metabolisms and require more frequent trips outside.

It will take between four to six months for your puppy to be fully house trained, but it will depend on their size, age and ability to learn. Some puppies can be toilet trained really quickly in a few weeks, whereas for some dogs it may take longer and could be up to a year.

No, rawhide does not dissolve in the dog's stomach. In fact, the opposite is true — the rawhide swells up. Far from being broken down, rawhide forces your dog to pass the pieces they swallow, making for a risk of bowel blockage.

Heat usually lasts between 2-4 weeks. Early in the cycle, a female dog may not be receptive to male dogs, although some are receptive through the entire cycle. It can be shorter or longer and you'll know the cycle is over when all her vulva returns to its normal size and there's no more bleeding or discharge.

By around eight weeks of age your puppy should be eating solid food.

Puppies should be fed three to four times a day therefore if you are currently feeding ¾ a cup of puppy food twice a day you should consider spacing it out by feeding ½ cup three times a day.

A good rule of thumb is a ratio of five minutes exercise per month of age (up to twice a day) until the puppy is fully grown, i.e.

15 minutes (up to twice a day) when three months old, 20 minutes when four months old etc.

Once they are fully grown, they can go out for much longer.

Puppies under six months of age shouldn't stay in a crate for more than three or four hours at a time.

They can't control their bladders and bowels for that long.

The same goes for adult dogs being housetrained.

Physically, an older dog can hold it, but they don't know they're supposed to.

According to this report, the total first-year cost of owning a dog is $1,270 and for a cat it's $1,070.

As you can see, having a pet can cost you over $1,000 in the first year, and well over $500 each additional year.

Depending on the food you buy and sudden medical expenses, the costs could be much higher.
