For the vast majority of smaller dogs, I am happy for them to be neutered at 6 to 9 months of age or prior to puberty if in a shelter situation. Large or giant breeds, it may be more appropriate to delay neutering, however consideration needs to be given regarding behaviour and ability of the owner to care for these dogs.

A very few uncontrolled studies have shown a link with early neuters (before 14 months of age) and some forms of cancer and joint problems. Both the joint problems and the cancers that they have linked are relatively common in large-boned dogs, so the challenge is to prove whether the early neuter actually caused an increase in the incidence.

They recommend getting your dog neutered only once they are six months old. This is applicable to both males and females. Prior to the introduction of safe methods of surgery and anesthetics, there was a common belief to neuter only a nearly fully-grown dog like a golden retriever, as that would help in better recovery and least discomfort.

This means you can safely neuter them at a younger age. I would recommend neutering the majority of small breed dogs at about one year old. Since their risk of problems after neutering is so much lower, it would even be OK to neuter small dogs before puberty. When should I neuter my large breed male dog?

Understand why it is important to neuter your dog. There are three main benefits to neutering a male dog. These include a decrease in unwanted puppies, medical benefits to the neutered dog, and a reduction in negative behaviors associated with intact (unneutered) dogs. Population control. A male dog that is neutered cannot produce any offspring.

Most veterinarians in the United States recommend bitches and dogs be spayed or castrated between 6 and 9 months of age.
