Nine-year-old Joseph Meister (18761940), who had been mauled by a rabid dog, was the first human to receive this vaccine. The treatment started with a subcutaneous injection on 6 July 1885, at 8:00 pm, which was followed with 12 additional doses administered over the following 10 days.

Rabies vaccine
Considered a core vaccine, rabies vaccines for dogs are required by law in the U.S. All dogs should be vaccinated for rabies at approximately
14
weeks of age, and then again at one year of age. Depending on your local regulations, re-vaccination should happen every
one to three years
.

Your puppy should receive its first rabies vaccination between 16 and 26 weeks of age. While rabies is a very dangerous disease for both dogs and humans, your puppy is unlikely to catch it from another dog, due to the fact that rabies vaccinations are required by law.

In most states, the first rabies vaccination is generally given to puppies at or before 16 weeks of age. The second rabies vaccination is given one year after the first vaccine. Then, your dog will be vaccinated every year or every three years depending on the state law and the vaccine used.

PET RABIES VACCINE: The vet will need proof of the pet's age. It must be at least 12 weeks old before it can get vaccinated. It is best to get your pet microchipped before it has the rabies vaccine. Otherwise, the pet will need vaccinating again afterwards.

Dogs and cats are first vaccinated for rabies between 4 and 6 months of age. They need a booster one year from that date. They are then vaccinated every three years , although some states still require annual rabies vaccinations for dogs and/or cats.

When to Administer the Rabies Vaccine Timing of the first rabies vaccination depends on state and city guidelines, hospital policy, and species. For dogs, it is typically first administered to puppies 12 to 16 weeks of age and then repeated in 1 year. Some vaccines are approved for subsequent 1-year use and some for 3-year use.

These are typically spaced three to four weeks apart, beginning when your puppy is 6 to 8 weeks old (though there are a few exceptions). The initial vaccine primes your puppys body against the bacteria or virus, while the following doses stimulate the immune system further to create the antibodies that will keep your puppy safe. The final vaccination in the series typically occurs around the 4-month mark, although your vet may change that schedule depending on your puppys health and ...

The one-year and three-year vaccines are virtually identical medically but not under the law. A one-year shot must be followed by re-vaccination a year later. Note: the one-year shot is not safer than the three-year (except that it may contain fewer adjuvants). 6. Vaccinate at the safest time.

Puppies can get a rabies shot from 3 months old or from 6 months old, depending on the Vaccination Type. Some manufacturers make vaccinations suitable for puppies of 3 months old, and others make it ideal for 6+ months old. Depending on the health of your dog, the vet will recommend the best time for your dog.
