Swimming is a great way to keep dogs cool, but stay safe The best prevention is to keep your dog indoors when the sun is strongest, between 11.00am and 3.00pm. Alternatively, pop a T-shirt on your dog and cover vulnerable areas to protect them.

How to keep a dog cool outside your home: Keep them out of direct sunlight. Make sure your dog has access to a shady spot where they can rest comfortably. Make sure your dog always has access to drinking water. In sweltering heat, add ice cubes to their water bowls. This gets them to drink more, and it cools them down quickly.

Set up a small wading pool or similar container of water for your dog to jump into and keep his cool in the yard. The dog might also like to run under the sprinkler. Be certain any pool you provide is not so deep that your dog could drown. The dog should be able to stand on the bottom of the pool with their head above the water.

Arguably the most important thing to do in order to keep a dog cool during the summer is to provide them with water. Dogs should always have access to clean, fresh, cold water that is replaced every few hours. But especially in the hot weather. You should also always encourage your dog to have a big drink after doing any kind of exercise.

Take your summertime walks in a grassy park or, in the least, direct your dog to walk on the grass next to the sidewalk. Cooler air is the best way to prevent and relieve overheating in your dog. No matter how you try to keep your dog cool, the best thing you can do is to keep a close eye on it. When in doubt, get the dog to a cooler area.

Keep black dogs in the shade on hot days. Consider pet sunscreen for white or pale dogs or dogs with shaved areas or no fur protection if they have to be in the sun for extended periods of time. They are vulnerable to sunburn, too.
