There are a few things you can do to help stop your dogs tendency to lick the floor or everything else they see. One of the most important is to be extremely careful when eating. Try not to let any crumbs fall to the floor, where your dog will be tempted to lick them up. You could also try giving your dog an alternative to licking the carpet. Try a toy stuffed with a treat, a puzzle toy, or even a popsicle specially made for dogs.

Why do chew bones stop dogs from licking floors? It has to do with having something to occupy them without having to lick the floor. The chew bone is going to give them something healthy to bite into. Chew bones are a great way to get the dogs mind off of the floor that it seems to be licking all the time.

Try using something like a Kong chew toys filled with peanut butter. It takes a lot of time to get all of the yummy food, which means (1) your pup will spend less of their time licking and (2) they'll be pretty mentally exhausted by the time they're done. Another great way to stop the licking is to train your dog to do new tricks.

Another tip before you head off to your appointment is to check to see if your dog responds to you when licking the floor. You should try calling his name or distracting him with food. Keeping a diary and taking note of any repeatable patterns or triggers for the behavior can also be useful. These tips may help your veterinarian piece together the puzzle of why your dog has decided to start exhibiting this behavior.

Try using unscented soaps and lotions, and see if your dog's licking declines. 4 Use citrus-scented skin products. Though there are exceptions, most dogs are generally repulsed by the smell and taste of citrus.

Try using a different, pet-friendly cleaning product. Traditional cleaning products can have certain ingredients that are toxic to dogs. This change in taste could be enough to get your dog to stop licking all the time. 6. A New Environment. If you have just moved into a new place, your dog could be licking the floor because it is stressed.

If you find your dog licking the floor all the time, K9 of Mine says you should first make sure the flooring is clean from food or cleaning product residue to ensure your dog isn't trying to lick something specific off the ground. Clean the area well with vinegar and water and be sure to rinse thoroughly with just water.

According to research, the most common reason by far that dogs lick floors and other unusual surfaces is dysfunction or pain of the stomach or intestines. Fortunately, treating the gastrointestinal problem resolves or significantly reduces the ELS behavior in most dogs.

Your vet may also recommend a calming medication, supplement or product. Also, apply a taste repellent to the
floor
where your pooch
licks
. A little ammonia, vinegar, cayenne pepper or citrus should deter
licking
.
