How to Keep Your Fluffy Friend Calm During Fireworks

Fireworks can be a traumatic experience for your dog. The loud noises and bright lights can send even the most laid-back pup into a tailspin. If you’re dreading firework season because you don’t want your dog to spend it shaking in fear, don’t worry! There are plenty of things you can do to keep your furry friend calm during the fireworks show. Here are 6 of them:

Try to Acclimate Your Dog to the Sound of Fireworks Gradually

If you know there’s going to be a firework display in your neighborhood, start playing recordings of fireworks at a low volume a few weeks in advance. Gradually increase the volume over time until your dog is desensitized to the sound. You can also give them treats or toys while playing the recordings to help create a positive association.

Walk Your Dog Before the Fireworks Start

On the event day, ensure your dog has plenty of exercise, so they’re nice and tired when the fireworks start. A long walk or game of fetch will do the trick. Just make sure it’s during the daylight, so they’re not already feeling anxious from the darkness. You might also want to consider feeding them a little later than usual so they don’t have too much energy pent up.

Create a Safe Space for Your Dog

Create a safe space for them to retreat to if they feel overwhelmed. This could be a crate or a small room where they can’t see or hear the fireworks. Make sure the space is comfortable with some of their favorite toys and blankets. You might also want to put on some calming background noise like classical music or white noise to help muffle the sound of the fireworks.

Close the Windows and Curtains

To further muffle the sound of the fireworks, close all the windows and curtains in your house. If it’s too hot to keep them closed, you can put on a fan to create some white noise. Just make sure not to point it directly at your dog, or it might make them more anxious.

Comfort Your Dog

If your dog is still feeling anxious, try to comfort them as best as you can. This might mean petting them or offering them words of encouragement. Some dogs also respond well to being hugged but make sure not to do it too tightly, or it will just make them more stressed.

When soothing your dog, make sure your voice and tone are calm and soothing as well. If you sound panicked, it will just make them more anxious.

Don’t Leave Them Alone

While you may want to head out to watch the fireworks, it’s best to leave your dog at home where they feel safe. If you must go, find someone who can stay with them and keep them company.

If you can’t find anyone to stay with them, consider boarding them at a pet hotel or daycare. That way, they’ll be in a safe and calm environment while you’re away.
