Wolves (canis lupus), coyotes (canis latrans), and domestic dogs (canis familiaris) are closely-related species.
All three can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring wolfdogs, coywolves, and coydogs.
Through DNA analysis, scientists have established that the wolf is the ancestor of the dog.
