Moonlight is a 1 year old female. She is 51 pounds, HW negative, mixed breed. She has white, medium length fur with light spotting. Her ears are floppy and spotted. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines. Moonlight was an owner surrender to our city shelter in November. They made no note of her being deaf so it is possible they did not realize. Even while at the shelter, it was not instantly clear that Moonlight is deaf. She is very intuitive! Eventually, she was evaluated by the medical team and determined to be deaf. Due to a canine flu outbreak, Moonlight is in short term foster care until 12/23 and then will return to Dallas Animal Services. Moonlight is a volunteer favorite- she is smiley, affectionate and easy to handle. She participates in the shelter playgroup and received the best rating (PG1) meaning she is social with other dogs and noted to have a push/pull play style.

Moonlight hasn’t had an owner that has cared for her and trained her in a way that supports her being deaf. In foster care, she has been quick to learn hand signals for several behaviors like sit, down, stop, good, etc. Moonlight is working on crate training. Her leash skills are fairly good- minimal pulling unless she sees a squirrel. She can be easily redirected in most cases. Moonlight is potty trained. She enjoys long walks and runs! She takes naps and likes to snuggle and get belly rubs. She enjoys chew toys and treat puzzles.

Moonlight would likely do well in a home with another dog- she really enjoyed being kenneled with other dogs at the shelter and was often observed snoozing up against them. Moonlight would do best with someone that is willing to learn best practices for training and caring for a deaf dog. She has endured major transitions in her short time on earth so someone who is patient in helping her acclimate to a new home and routine will be great! Moonlight likes all people and would likely even do well with children. She is a loving companion!

Moonlight is currently available for foster, rescue or adoption thru Dallas Animal Services.
