While it is completely possible for your dog to survive on a meat-free diet, there are a few reasons why you shouldnt go that route. First, dogs are used to eating meat. That is what their bodies were designed to do, and most commercial dog foods contain meat proteins for that reason.

The short answer is yes: carnivores cannot survive without meat. Animal nutrition is a wholly misunderstood science. One of my nieces has been a veterinary assistant for about twelve years now. She feeds her cats and dogs the most expensive food money can buy and insists that everyone else does the same.

Your dog has a digestive tract designed for meat scavenging, but they may not thrive on meat alone. Your dog's system needs meat, fruit, and vegetables in their diet. Wild dogs will eat all kinds of things containing seeds or partially digested vegetation to get the natural vitamins their bodies crave.

According to the NRC (National Research Council), dogs require specific nutrients such as protein, not specific feedstuffs such as meat. So, they can get their protein from meat-free sources and still satisfy their bodily needs for wellness.

Wild dogs survive on meat, fruits and vegetables. Studies find that while a raw meat diet meets protein needs, it often misses the mark on other essential nutrients. Unless you offer supplements, your dog's nutritional needs are not being met.

Signs Dogs Can Live Without Meat.

A few signs that dogs really shouldn't be put on a meatless diet include the scientific fact that dogs are omnivores, which means that their diets include both meat and plant-based foods when they are in the wild.

Overall, surviving without meat is possible, but there will be some physical and psychological changes in your body before getting used to it. It might be hard at first, but you will be surprised by all the health and environmental benefits it entails.
