Kennels are an option for your dog when youre away, however this will depend on whether your dog is comfortable with being in a kennel environment. Many dogs find kennels isolating and if your dog hates being left alone, leaving them in a home environment where they can enjoy the company of people will be best for them.

As a guideline, while staying in boarding kennels your dog should always have: Access to their own sleeping area at all times. Sufficient space in the kennel to allow all dogs to sit and stand at full height, lie down fully stretch out, wag their tail, walk and turn around. At least one daily walk outside of their kennel.

Research suggests that dogs do miss their owners when boarded in kennels. There have been multiple studies to see how dogs react when their owners leave, and all point to changes in the dogs behavior. However, dont let that put you off putting your dog into boarding kennels.

The bottom line is every dog has their own personality, quirks, likes and dislikes. These things will all influence how you will choose to successfully occupy your dog (or puppy) in their crate or kennel. Some dogs destroy anything that isnt nailed down, others are food or toy driven while some would rather sleep.

Dogs need a den, or a small space just for them, to feel safe, cozy, and secure. When a crate is used appropriately, it can give dogs this feeling of a safe space and it can be a sanctuary for a dog. Dogs will sometimes find small spaces to hide if they dont have crates, like under furniture or by digging holes and curling up in them.

Owners also place their dogs in kennels should they need to go out of town. While this is common practice, a lot of dogs do not like being in a crate or going to the kennel. The kennel and crate are not for every dog, especially those that have not been properly trained and prepared for the experience and those who have had negative experiences.

Yes, you read that right& dogs could like being in kennels, and rather than being sad and depressed are actually excited by the proposition. To conclude, the study said: Short-term kennelling did not seem to represent a negative stressor for these dogs.

Is it OK to put my dog in a kennel?

  • However, dont let that put you off putting your dog into boarding kennels. Not all dogs get sad when boarded, and most of the time it will be a positive experience for them. If its a reputable boarding kennels they will get spoiled, lots of play with other dogs, and loads of attention.
