What Shots (Vaccinations) Do Older Dogs Need. Some family pet owners tend to consider parvo and distemper in dogs and feline panleukopenia, calicivirus and herpesvirus in felines as diseases that only affect pups and kittens. By the time our pets are 8, 10 or 12 years or older they must have been immunized for these illness several times in their lives: the first couple of times as puppies or kittycats, a booster at one year then boosters every three years, as advised by the American ...

This disease affects a dog's respiratory, nervous and gastrointestinal systems as well as their eyes. There is no medicinal treatment for distemper but rather supportive care to manage the symptoms. If a dog survives the disease, there is a possibility of life-long effects which include seizures, nervous system disorders and brain damage.

The DAP vaccine protects against a combination of diseases that can spread quickly among dogs and have serious implications for canines, including severe illness and death. Canine distemper is a devastating disease that is highly contagious in unvaccinated dogs and can result in severe neurologic signs, pneumonia, fever, encephalitis and death.

The distemper vaccine is a shot for dogs that will protect them from getting infected with the virus once theyve received all the required doses. The distemper vaccine comes in two forms, Dr. Bustamante said. One form of the distemper vaccine for dogs is a modified-live virus vaccine.

For for core vaccines (distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus-2) these suggest a schedule of one year after the initial puppy series of vaccines and then every three years after that. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) proposes similar timing but does preface its 2015 Vaccination Guidelines by saying:

Only instead of seeking vaccines to prevent things like measles, dogs require vaccines to prevent the onset of the likes of rabies, distemper, parvovirus and more. However, the frequency at which dogs need these vaccines is largely dependent on their age, the record keeping of the owner and the owners vet practice and the professional opinion of the veterinarian as it pertains to what non-core vaccines are necessary for the particular animal.

This vaccination also protects against hepatitis (adenovirus), leptospirosis, parvo and parainfluenza, this is known as the 5-way vaccine.

Dogs should receive a vaccination against canine distemper at 6 to 8 weeks, 10 to 12 weeks and 14 to 16 weeks.

A booster shot is provided at 12 months and every three years after.

Boarding facilities, grooming salons, day care and classes can require your dog be current for distemper and parvo vaccines due to the higher probability of disease transmission in multi-dog settings. But, by and large, you have the ability choose to vaccinate based on your dogs personal lifestyle.

There is some evidence that older dogs do not need revaccination with certain vaccines like distemper and parvovirus once they reach a certain age. It is likely older dogs that have been consistently vaccinated have adequate immunity, and some of these vaccines may provide long-term or lifetime protection.

In both dogs and cats, the vaccine for distemper is ideally first given between 6 and 8 weeks of age, with 2 further boosters given every 3 weeks. From there, the animal should be vaccinated every year, or every 3 years but only if the animal has a known vaccination history and has been vaccinated regularly.
