And it goes without saying, Mastiffs are a huge breed. Which means there is plenty of surface area for hair to grow on them. And, while the physical size of the dog doesnt impact the speed at which his hair falls out, this can make a difference overall because theres just so much fur on his body. So they shed, a fair bit.

In fact, English mastiffs shed only moderately; but they are known to shed all year round. Its notoriously worse in the fall and summertime. This is when their winter coat is being shed in preparation for a lighter summer coat and as the weather changes.

Unfortunately, mastiffs are known to shed a lot. This has a lot to do with their general size as opposed to the type of fur that they have. In other words, because these dogs are so big, there is much more of their fur to shed. In fact, English mastiffs shed only moderately; but they are known to shed all year round.

  • An English Mastiff sheds at least two times a year. During the spring and fall seasons you may expect heavy shedding and you should brush your dog to prevent any hairs from flying around. But some dogs shed all year round.

Although shedding regularly occurs, take note that this doesnt just happen on this particular breed. If you are looking for a dog that doesnt shed, there isnt one, unfortunately. All dogs have to take off their fur at one point since hair growth is a continuous process. Albeit the great English Mastiff breed sheds, know that its okay!

As is common with many breeds of dog, many mastiffs predominantly shed during two seasons: summer and fall. Depending on your location and weather, this may vary or shift. And, remember this: The grand size of the mastiff means there is just that much more hair to shed.
