September 2007- Dogs are the public first became aware that dogs were getting sick after eating jerky-type treats and chicken jerky for dogs. Doubtless, there were more dogs who were also victims, but a connection was never made to the treats. Ultimately, over 1,000 dogs died. Complaints have continued to come into the FDA since then.

As they reported last week, the FDA says that 360 dogs have died in the last 18 months, after eating chicken jerky treats made in China. All in all, the FDA has received approximately 2,200 reports of pet illnesses which may be related to the consumption of the jerky treats. Cases have been reported from all 50 states and 6 Canadian provinces.

The Food and Drug Administration says 580 dogs and cats have died after eating jerky pet treats --- and imported pet food from China is suspected of causing the deaths. The agency said that most of the jerky treats implicated have been made in China, but the exact cause for the deaths is unknown. More than 1,140 dogs have died after eating jerky pet treats, out of 6,200 cases of jerky-related canine illness reported to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 2007 to December 31, 2015. FDA recently released those figures in an update on its continuing investigation into animal illnesses and deaths related to jerky-style treats.

  • The problem with jerky treats was first formally identified in 2007. Approximately 3,000 dogs and 10 cats are known to have become sick, and almost 600 dogs are known to have died. I cant even imagine how many more have gone undiagnosed.

Dr Nicola Robinson, Head of Service at the VPIS told us: The consumption of Jerky treats in dogs has been linked to Fanconi syndrome in dogs and cats and we have had many cases reported to us here at the VPIS since 2016. Fanconi syndrome affects the kidneys and in severe cases leads to death or the pet has to be euthanised. The toxin has not yet been identified so we would recommend that owners are cautious giving these treats especially if they originate in China. The issue is not ...
