Your Patterdales can also develop cataracts and glaucoma two kinds of eye diseases. Glaucoma can unfortunately lead to blindness but something can be done if you recognize the signs. There are 2 main types of canine glaucoma, characterized by pressure inside the eye which can do damage to the retina and optic nerve primary- and secondary glaucoma.

The Patterdale terrier is not a good match for people who are not particularly active, and the dog will not thrive with just a couple of short walks per day. They need plenty of walks both on the lead and off the lead, as well as interactive play and being able to stretch their legs and run around.

They mostly have a black nose, but liver-colored Patterdales have a reddish nose. Teeth should be level or scissor bite, but since the Patterdale Terrier is a working dog, any broken teeth arent taken against the dog. Patterdales have muscular neck, long, sloping shoulders, and forelegs that are strong.

Patterdales will often develop allergies, so this is commonly the cause of the pink eye issue. Not only are seasonal allergies a concern, but skin allergies can develop too. If your pup has allergies, you may see some dermatitis developing across the body.

The Patterdale is an extremely courageous working terrier, traditionally used to go to ground. Patterdales are extremely willing to work and have a high desire to please. They are very active and have a strong prey drive; and though they should be peaceful with humans, livestock and other dogs, they are not a dog for the average pet owner.

Many farmers use them today for ratting or protecting game birds during a hunt. This means that they will go for small creatures such as rats or squirrels quite often ignoring their owners call for them to come back. This can be extremely dangerous near main roads.

Patterdales form strong ties with their owners and as such they never really like being left on their own for any length of time. This could lead to a dog suffering from separation anxiety and their way of relieving stress is to be destructive and noisy around the home.
