Placid, laid-back, gentle, intelligent, loyal and affectionate, a Basset Bleu de Gascogne shares many of the traits seen in Basset Hounds. With this said, they are the perfect choice for anyone who leads a more sedentary and quiet life with a easy-going canine companion to keep them company.

The Basset Bleu de Gascogne originated in France and came into being from a breeding program that included the larger Grand Bleu de Gascogne. The BBdG is the smallest of all the Bleu de Gascogne. Known for its outstanding sense of smell, the BBdG is valued for its hunting abilities on both fur and feather game, covering ground at speed and with much enthusiasm!

Like many other hound breeds, the Basset Bleu de Gascogne is a sensitive dog by nature and as such, they do not answer well to any sort of harsh correction or heavy handed training methods which would more than likely just bring out the stubborn streak in them.

Every point of the Basset Bleu de Gascogne is for a purpose relevant to preserving the breed and its uniqueness. Judges are asked to keep this fact in mind when evaluating the merits of an individual hound. Active, agile and lively with a fine nose and strong hunting ability, excellent in a pack or on his own.
