Causes of dog acne include genetic predispositions, hormones, as well as trauma/stress.

Bulldogs and other breeds with wrinkly skin are more prone to acne because bacteria become trapped between skin folds, the perfect environment for pimples to bloom.

Why Do They Get Acne? Like I said before, when a bulldog plays and eats, thats when you see the saliva and massive amount of drool come out. It soaks up any food particles, dust, dirt, germs, etc. from playing and then covers their face.

The Causes of Dog Acne. Dog acne can be caused by a number of things, depending on the dog and their living environment. Acne is a normal part of adolescence for dogs, so some breakouts will occur regardless of what you do as a caretaker. Other times it may be related to hormonal changes, an allergic reaction to a food or product, bacteria, or poor hygiene.

Acne in dogs is caused by the same things that cause human acne, a combination of excess oily sebum and dead skin cells mixing together which causes the hair follicles to get clogged, resulting in raised and red lumps, blackheads or whiteheads.

It occurs when the hair follicles become irritated. Dogs with short coats such as Boxers, Bulldogs, and Rottweilers are the breeds most likely to have this condition. Dogs may also experience intense pain and itching. Acne tends to come on at puberty, from five to eight months of age.
