Start taking the puppy away from his mother for a few hours a day. Place her in a secluded, warm, dry, draft-free area. Offer her some moist puppy chow in a clean pie plate. You can also soften dry dog food until it has a gruel texture. Be prepared for this to be a messy adventure. Let her experiment with trying to eat the food.

Shetland Sheepdogs, popularly called Shelties, are small, compact herding dogs that resemble small Collies. These dogs' high energy level requires a nutritious diet high in protein and other nutrients. Owners should keep an eye on their dogs overall condition and health, and if the dogs begin to gain weight they should be fed less, while dogs that are too thin usually need more food.

Growing puppies, for example, consume more calories than adult dogs and so do young adult dogs. A young adult Shetland Sheepdog puppy weighing 15 pounds needs an estimated 591 calories per day. Because of the breeds small to medium size, we recommend feeding a food designed for small to medium dogs.
