Swallowing the avocado seed would cause choking leading to death. In the rare event, the seed does make it past the gullet, gastrointestinal obstruction would ensue, with disastrous consequences for your dog. Frequent avocado consumption can lead to drastic weight gain in dogs. This does raise some health concerns.

While dogs and cats are rarely affected by persin, avocado poisoning can be deadly to birds and large animals (such as cows, goats, sheep). The bigger risk to dogs and cats is a foreign body obstruction in the esophagus, stomach, or intestinal tract if part or all of a large avocado seed is swallowed.

Studies have been conducted that show that avocado is not highly toxic to dogs; however, if a dog were to ingest the seed of an avocado, it could cause illness. Avocado pits can cause blockages within the gastrointestinal tract and different varieties of avocado have varying amounts of persin.

6. Avocado. Although this fruit is super-healthy for boosting your metabolism, its harmful to dogs. Avocado has a substance called persin, which most of the dogs are allergic to. So, it would be the best if your dog could avoid this plant completely, even its leaves and tree.

The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) wants to make sure you know the dangers of avocados inside and out. Avocado ingestion can cause stomach upset in some dogs. The pit is the biggest worry, if ingested it can cause an obstruction. We do not see heart or reproductive problems in dogs and cats that we do in other kinds of animals.

Avocados The avocado leaves, fruit, bark, and seeds contain a toxin called persin. Dogs and cats are rarely affected by the amounts in the fruit itself. But it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The high-fat content can cause pancreatitis as well. The pit is a significant choke hazard and can cause intestinal blockages.

It is present in the leaves, skin, seeds and fruit of the avocado. Dogs and cats do not appear to be sensitive to this poison, although other animals certainly are. Ingestion of large amounts of persin might indeed bother a dogs stomach, but this would require eating a lot of leaves, bark or avocado peels. Although dogs are silly enough to eat the pits, not many dogs will sit down to graze on a meal of avocado leaves! Avocado Pulp
