What is a male dog called? No, its not just good boy. Male dogs are often referred to as studs. Like female dogs, the references to male dogs change based on their reproductive status. If the male dog has produced puppies, it would be called a sire.

The proper term for a male dog is "dog". A male dog that is usedfor breeding is called a "stud dog", or a "sire". A dog that hasn'tbeen "fixed", or neutered is called unaltered, or "intact". What...

Neutered, by definition is both spaying and castration. Females are spayed, males are castrated. A term I've heard used to refer to a castrated dog is a "jerry" dog. The term "neuter" is used to describe castration in a dog. It is the surgical removal of a male dog's testicles.

Male dog neutering, otherwise known as sterilisation, "fixing", desexing, castration (castrating) or by its correct veterinary name: orchiectomy (also termed gonadectomy), is the surgical removal of a male dog's testicles for the purposes of canine population control, medical health benefit, genetic-disease control and behavioral modification.

For a normal dog neuter, a single incision is made directly in front of the testicles and scrotum. Dogs with undescended testicles, a condition known as cryptorchidism, will experience a procedure more similar to a canine spay, in which the veterinarian will likely have to cut open the abdomen to find the testicles.

Unlike livestock, where castrated animals have additional names, there is no special term for a dog that is intact as opposed to neutered. However, the name of the sterilization procedure is gendered. Male dogs are neutered by having their testicles surgically removed.

Colloquially, you'd call the male, a dog and the female, a bitch. When you are tracing lineage, the male is called "sire", whilst the female is referred to as the dam. At what age should male dogs be neutered?

A gelding is a castrated male. This term is correct but seldom used anymore. You can use it, but you might get some odd looks. A sire is the father of a litter.

A standard male dog is commonly known as a "dog." In technical terms, this implies that the dog hasn't fathered any young, nor has it been used for breeding. Animals are commonly called only one collective name without any clear distinction. However, this is where dogs differ from cats.

"Neutering" is often used incorrectly to refer only to male animals, but the term actually applies to both sexes.

The male-specific term is castration, while spaying is usually reserved for female animals.

Colloquially, both terms are often referred to as fixing.

In male horses, castrating is referred to as gelding.
